Virtually every living creature needs a home albeit a nest a lair
a den, they need a home to bring up their young. For humans it is a
basic need to have a shelter, security, a safe haven to return to. A
home is probably the most expensive item they will ever acquire whether
it is purchased of rented.
Without a safe warm place to return to, that will shelter us from the elements we become traumatized, stressed and anxious. It is such an instinct to need a home, the homeless often resort to finding a cardboard box to crawl into. I was horrified to see this years ago when I visited London. Now the situation is much worse than then. Imagine for a moment being a street dweller out in all weathers, can you think of anything worse, unable to work as they don't have an address, or place to wash or take care of themselves, how can they ever get out of the situation!
With our ever-expanding numbers in Britain the government, despite it's promising to build more housing is failing to provide enough homes for people. There is overcrowding in existing dwellings and long housing waiting lists. The prices have escalated to the extent houses are out of reach of many young families, prices probably driven because of the short supply.
Private rental properties are snapped up as soon as they become vacant and many of the available properties are unfit for purpose but people live in them as they have no choice.
There is a solution to this housing crisis in the form of fast build, eco-friendly dwellings that can be built collectively as communities and rented out my councils or purchased privately. With a slight change to the planning laws these homes could also be utilized as extra accommodation in much the same way as cabins are used for extra space in schools. However these are built to the highest energy-saving specification available, and therefore cheap to run, fast to build, and could quickly ease the housing crisis. They can also be later moved and re-erected, a perfect answer also for disaster areas.
These homes would be suitable for all ages, both for families and the elderly. With a slight tweak to the law they could be placed in gardens to give homes for elderly relatives, or squally for the younger generation, not currently able to get onto the housing ladder.
For the elderly it would make caring for family members easier because of their close proximity, encouraging families to care for their elders as in many other countries, but because of the size of many British homes this isn't feasible. Another advantage could be a reduction of need for community care, plus freeing up hospital beds.
The people and the government need these solutions to avert this housing crisis, they can be built fast, are economical to provide and run, Eco-friendly homes that can be adapted to various purposes. So besides helping the housing crisis they could get people off the street and away from crime, saving on policing and jail admissions and prison overcrowding. They could relieve some pressure on elderly care and hospital beds, so besides the housing crisis benefits there is a knock on effect in many areas.
